Victor stares at Alice for a moment, wondering what she's going on about. Then he realizes what must be going through her mind. He lowers his eyes. "No," he says, hating himself for having to disappoint her. "I can't. From what I've b-been able to f-figure out, she r-rose because she h-heard my vows and t-thought they were for her.
